2018: A YEAR IN REVIEW
An overview of the past year; what I've learnt and how I can use those experiences to my advantage for 2019!
I think each time a year ends, we find ourselves saying "Wow, this year flew by" and sometimes it does seem that way. But when looking back at the events of the past 12 months, are you happy with all that's happened? Did you wish things went differently? What life lessons did you gain? While we can attempt to plan out our year, we need to be mindful that life happens. As a result, we must allow ourselves to be open to change. This post is a look at my 2018 and how I was able to have a fulfilled year, despite obstacles that I may have faced.
Take time for yourself
“Self love is not being selfish"
As a medical professional, I'm constantly giving of myself to others and while that is fulfilling, it does take a toll on me physically, emotionally and mentally. But what I've come to realize is that before I can take care of others, I must take care of myself. And that is so important. So what do I do to unwind, relax and reset?
I love pampering myself. I've kept up with doing regular mani/pedis at the spa and I can't even begin to tell how great something as simple as that can make you feel. It always helps to switch up the colour and design of your nail polish to keep things fun! Gel polish is my favourite. It's a no-brainer, very durable and they literally last for weeks. Now don't think that you must go to a spa as you can always #DIY at home. I'm already thinking of the next nail polish shade I wanna try #haha, but red is my go-to!
Another important part of my self care is my skin care; one of my favourite topics #obsessed! Our skin is our largest organ #funfact and it's one of the first things people notice when they meet us, and at times we feel self-conscious about whatever skin issue we're struggling with. For me it was my super oily, acne prone skin. After trying a lot of drugstore products, I decided to invest in my skin and purchase some new products. I started using the ZO Skin Health line in October 2018 and they are absolutely life changing #noexaggerating. As a result, I've felt more confident in my skin and knew I was putting my best face forward, literally.Check out my "What your skin is craving" post to learn more about my skin health journey.
On days when I was just too tired to leave the house, I would have a Netflix day (yes that exists, it's not just 'Netflix and chill' #lol). I would turn on my favourite show or find a great movie, get myself some popcorn and snacks and just relax in the quiet of my room. Throw a glass of wine into the mix and I'm all set! Whatever it takes, give yourself an atmosphere to have a relaxed head space. Trust that it helps your sanity in the long run.
Self love and self respect
Self respect is so important, I can't stress that enough! Learning and knowing your worth is your own personal defense mechanism against those that think they can belittle you. Not every life experience will be a walk in the park and they often leave us feeling defeated. But you must find it within yourself to overcome any adversity, lift your head up high and move on. Trust me, that takes guts and a lot of willpower but it's necessary to regain your sanity and dignity. Love yourself enough to know you deserve the very best; and I mean this for every aspect of life because it does apply. Stand for something or you will fall for anything. You are worth so much more than you think! #believeit #ownit
Trying Something New
I've always been told that I should model, mainly because of my height and build (I'm about 5'8"). I would always just laugh it off and hadn't actually looked in the possibility. So, luckily I have a friend and coworker that's a photographer (Shutter In Motion - be sure to check out his stunning work on IG at instagram.com/shutter_in_motion/). I was able to test the waters with modelling in February 2018 and it was one of the best experiences ever. Learning my angles, playing with facial expressions and wardrobe changes, I loved every minute of it.
I went on to have another photoshoot with Shutter In Motion in October 2018 and we totally switched things up. This time the vibe was more urban and it was thrilling to shoot outdoors in Port-of-Spain, my country's capital city.
As I learnt some pointers from my friend, I decided that on my trip to Barbados, I would plan to have a #photoshoot with a Bajan photographer. I was lucky enough to work with Shane Leacock (instagram.com/shaneleacock/) and he helped me execute the most gorgeous sunset photos. I knew exactly the theme I wanted : Tropical glam on the beach (my happy place). I am still obsessing over the photos #goldenhour. I was truly in my element at that photoshoot; it all felt so natural.
Wanderlust is real
“Travel: it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller ”
Before 2018, I hadn't travelled outside of my home country for 10 years! Seems strange right? Well it was a combination of factors that just didn't allow me to have the flexibility of frequent travel. But as I earned my degree, started working and had my own income I made it my mission to ensure that I included travel into my lifestyle. I went to Texas (for the first time) and New York (one of my favourite cities) over a two week period. Shortly after that, I had a girls' trip with some of my best friends to Barbados, and now I'm #officiallyobsessed with that country. If you've never been, add it to you travel bucket list because it is such a beautiful country in all aspects! I hope to do more travelling in this new year because it can open so many doors; meeting new people, networking, experiencing new foods and culture...it just adds richness to your life.
So much to be thankful for
In 2018 I became an aunt for the first time to my beautiful nephew, Marcello. I had the continued support of my parents and family, and my amazing friends really showed up for me at a time that I desperately needed their support. I forged new friendships and was just able to end the year on a high note.
